Protect Your Patients from HIPAA Violations When You Retire

My Retired Doctor keeps patient records secure yet accessible and complies with all HIPAA requirements

protect your patientsAccording to an analysis conducted by MedCity News, almost 15 million people have been affected by HIPAA violations since 2009. Naturally, you don’t want to put your patient’s data at risk for unauthorized access once you retire. That’s why it’s important to choose your records custodian very carefully. At My Retired Doctor, medical record storage and security is our specialty. We can provide better security and a better retrieval experience for your patients than a medical facility or another physician could. We’re probably even more secure than your current setup for records storage. Here’s why.

Our Staff Don’t Read the Records

Many HIPAA violations are the result of employees discussing private information. This could be a problem if the discussion takes place where other patients could overhear, or if the employees engaged in the discussion are not actively involved in patient care and should not be discussing medical information at all. At My Retired Doctor, our staff do not read the medical records in our care or discuss them at all, which removes the possibility for an accidental HIPAA violation due to gossip.

Our Facility Isn’t Public

Unlike a doctor’s office or hospital, which is open to patients and other members of the public, our facility is closed and secure. We even track the movements of our authorized employees to see who is accessing the records storage areas in person and on the computer. Therefore it is highly unlikely that an unauthorized individual would be able to locate a record and read it like they might in a busy medical office or hospital.

We Can Digitize Your Records

Electronic health records offer improved security over paper records, both in storage and in transfer. It is far more difficult to break into a secure online network than it is to physically break into a building. It is also harder to intercept an electronic file transfer than it is to intercept a mailed or faxed document. At My Retired Doctor, we highly recommend letting us scan and digitize your patient records to help prevent HIPAA violations as well as reduce your records storage costs. We use sophisticated software to create the digital versions of the patient records so you can rest assured no information will be lost or compromised.

We Vet all Records Retrieval Requests Carefully

If you entrust your patient records to a hospital or doctor, you risk an overworked employee inadvertently violating patient HIPAA protections by fulfilling an unauthorized release request. At My Retired Doctor, this won’t happen because our staff can focus exclusively on records request fulfillment activities. We know this process inside and out and we will not release records if we are not satisfied that all legal requirements have been met.
